MUSIC FROM THE DREAMLANDS

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

But some foolish or perhaps brave individuals always sail their ships of curiosity into the alluring darkness of the void, and are invariably horrified at what they find lurking just beyond.

While these few aggravate the eldritch beasts in the mist, the rest of the world remains oblivious to the madness that dictates the very nature of the universe. However their obliviousness proves a boon, as once one begins to unravel the intricate and infinitely complex web of hideous truths, it becomes impossible to maintain any hope of sanity.

________________________________________________________________________________________

The year is 1924. The place; Massachusetts, a state bathed in the infamy of its otherworldly and macabre undercurrents. Through it cuts the Miskatonic River, running from the hills just west of Dunwich to where it enters the Atlantic Ocean. On its bank lies Miskatonic University, an institute to rival Harvard and Yale, but unique among its peers for its eccentricity and unorthodoxy.

Arkham is the epicenter of the preternatural North East, surrounded by such oddities as Innsmouth, Dunwich, Salem, and Kingsport. Aside from the University, the quaint New England burg also plays host to the Arkham Sanitorium, long term housing for those few who dig too deep into the things that man was not meant to know.

No matter who you are or chose to be, you have been influenced by the strange goings-on in the state of Massachusetts. Something as innocuous as a newspaper clipping could have set your curiosity ablaze, or even something as horrendous as a family member being sacrificed, or worse.

So basically, in the interest of being interesting, I’m not going to set anything in stone. You are who you choose to be, and your own actions will be what destroys you. You could be a dockworker, a student, a beat cop, an artist, an inbred dirt farmer, I don't really care. The only thing that will unite you is what you will uncover, your shared insanity.

I'll answer any questions if ya got 'em.

Name: Floyd Dempsey

Gender: Male

Age: 42

Background: Grew up in the loud obnoxious developing city of Boston with a hard-working father, very caring mother, and five brothers. His father drowned in a shipping accident while his mother and eldest brother, Mason, both died from cases of typhoid fever. Floyd served as a sergeant in the trenches of The Great War where he witnessed the death of his youngest brother, Lucas.

Current Info: Floyd Dempsey is a low-class dockworker from Boston with a wife, two daughters, and one son. His younger brother, Gene, is a history professor at Miskatonic University.

Skills: Heavy-lifting, tying knots, loading and unloading ships, and knowing the correct handling of hazardous materials. His time in the trenches gave him other skills he's not too proud of.

Name: Benjamin "Benji" Moore

Gender: Male

Age: 28

Background: Benji has always wanted to be a writer, but lacks the motivation to do so. He constantly scours the streets in search of his muse that will make him the next Poe or Stoker. With a macabre romantic side to him, he often looks for beautiful women and unexplainable happenings to base his work off of.

With a room filled with half written poems and short stories in a deranged scatter of crumpled paper, Benji spends his days and nights pouring over page after page only to be more and more dissatisfied.

He grew up living with his aunt and uncle after the mysterious disappearance of his parents in 1899 while they were residing in Arkham.

Current Info: Benji resides in Salem, Massachusetts where he works as an apprentice for his Uncle's car manufacturing business. Single all his life, Benji finds it difficult speaking to women and has not received an education beyond high school.

Skills: Rhyming, not finishing, quitting, finding things out of the ordinary

Personality: Benji may come off as very shy, but in reality he is just very lost in his own thoughts about the world around him. He will often bring up something disturbing/distasteful to others due to a lack in social functioning.

Name: Azar al-Sanaa

Gender: Male

Age: 40~

Background:
Supposedly born to a wealthy family at the end of the 19th century in Ottoman Syria, Azar gained prominence in the academic world in his early twenties when he published a theory proposing that some members of the Umayyad dynasty had engaged in occultic activities and worshipped strange pagan deities. In his publication, the young man, based on information garnered from ancient ledgers and trade routes that seemed positively contrived, listed a number of possible locations where some of the ceremonies and rituals that the family members allegedly performed might have taken place. Yet, against the roar of a mob of scholars decrying the piece as some sort of joke or hoax, evidence of human sacrifice and grotesquely malformed skeletons were discovered at every location that Azar had listed.

Azar continued to gain position and prestige among the society of Ottoman scholars, until, in 1913, seemingly out of nowhere and to the dismay and confusion of his colleagues, he accepted a lowly offer as Doctor Prentis Munt's assistant, who was the Professor of Occult Studies at the time.

A year later, the Great War had started, and in the chaos of the collapsing Ottoman Empire, all records that might have verified Azar's origins were lost. Azar al-Sanaa worked under the doctor for a short time until, in 1916, the man suffered a mental break while working with Azar and his graduates at an excavation site at Cape Horn before he was institutionalized at the Arkham Sanitorium. Azar then put in an application for the vacant position and was summarily accepted.

Current Info: Azar al-Sanaa is a professor and scholar currently working at the Miskatonic University. He is the Professor of Occult Studies at the university and teaches classes on Ancient and Medieval Magics and Occult History and Practical Application. The term “occult,” from the Latin occultus, means hidden or secret, and the Occult Studies department is devoted to uncovering the secret knowledge of societies around the globe.

Azar owns and lives at a large estate in the city of Arkham, Massachusetts near the campus. He is known for allowing his students and graduates to come to his home and go as they please - encouraging them to peruse the many shelves of his expansive library (which contains several dozen books and tomes found not even in the Miskatonic's bibliotheca) and study amongst each other in his parlour.

Skills:
As his position implies, Professor al-Sanaa has an extensive knowledge on the histories of cultic and secret societies as well as their many rituals, magics, ceremonies, and spells. Other than this, the professor also has an impressive knowledge on Middle Eastern archaeology, history, and languages from the 7th, 8th, and 9th centuries AD - having actually translated and published several manuscripts of Arabic and Muslim poetry and writing from this time.

Personality: Azar is a seemingly calm and soft-spoken individual who is serious about his research and academic work. He is also a model teacher - showing concern for his students when they fall and trying to motivate them to study harder.

Appearance:
Click. Azar stands at about 5'11". He has green eyes, dark brown hair, and always wears a serious and thoughtful expression.

Name: Michael Raimi

Gender: Male

Age: 37

Background: Originally a detective from Salem, an accident rendering his child mute sent Raimi's life spiraling out of control. Losing his career and his relationship with his family, he left his home and began traveling the country, bullshitting his way into a job as an occult journalist. Michael has been running from his problems for ten years now, and the burden of the life he lost weighs heavily upon him.

Current Info:
Michael has lived out of his car and hotels for the last several years, doing everything he could to avoid returning home. He has an estranged wife, and an eleven year old mute daughter. An ex Detective, Riami currently writes freelance occult articles, as well as the occasional novel or performing a guest lecture.

Skills: Expert liar and bullshitter, vague knowledge of the occult (has made up or plagiarised the contents of most of his writings), as an ex Detective he also has honed deductive skills.

Personality: Michael is a jaded individual, worn from faking his way through his current career. Frequently rude and even condescending, Raimi will act any way he needs in order to further his own goals. Raimi has a deep complex relating to his family, but deeply misses his young daughter.

Name: Suzanne Sutcliffe

Gender: Female

Age: 24

Background: An only child, Suzanne Sutcliffe was born to a very academic and intellectual family. Her father, Webb Sutcliffe, was a prominent researcher of microbiology before succumbing to an extreme case of bacterial meningitis in 1910 which he most likely contracted while working on one of his projects. Her mother, Samantha Sutcliffe, was a theoretical physicist before falling victim to a freak accident in 1912. The details of this accident have been deemed "classified" by the government of the United States of America.

Little Suzy was then raised by her uncle and aunt, John and Mary Sutcliffe-Kershaw, a pair of professors teaching Latin at a college in Brooklyn. Seeming to choose a much safer profession considering the fates of her parents, Suzanne studied hard in her classes to become a historian. After graduating from her high school, she was invited to attend classes at the Miskatonic University with a full scholarship.

Current Info: Suzanne currently lives in Applewood Hall, a dormitory in the student housing section on campus known as the Warrens. She is a graduate student with a dual major in Archaeology and History. After the professor's last teaching aide ended up being expelled for cheating, Professor Azar al-Sanaa chose Suzanne to be his graduate teaching assistant, a position that has been seen as the envy of many students of history at the university.

Skills: As a student of history and archaeology, Suzanne has a large wealth of knowledge within these fields. While working on Azar, she has gained quite a bit of knowledge of the occult world as well. She is also fluent in Latin.

Personality: Despite her many academic successes, Suzanne suffers from a terrible stammer while in the presence of strangers. Saying more than short phrases and single words to people that she has never met is extremely challenging for her. However, once she adequately knows a person well enough, she can hold a normal conversation with them.

Other than this, she is a very hardworking person who strives to be the best in all of her classes. And even in spite of her stammer, she is not above tricks and deceit to get a leg up on the academic ladder.

Lovecraft: Arkham Horror Empty Re: Lovecraft: Arkham Horror

Post by Thade Mon Jan 11, 2016 12:18 pm

Name: Idris Cain

Gender:
Male

Age:
25

Background: Born into a family of Dunwich farmers, Idris was always the unusual one among his numerous brothers and sisters. He detested rural life, and upon American entry into The Great War, he immediately enlisted as an infantryman. He was only sixteen, and forged his birth certificate in order to be allowed into combat.

During the War, he witnessed many things he wishes he hadn’t, and did things he wishes he could forget. He saw friends fall around him, and so called ‘foes’ fall before him.

After a particularly grueling stint of combat in which he lost a close friend, Idris stole a bottle of medical alcohol and snuck away to a house half destroyed by mortar shells to drown the shell shock. Inside he found a piano, remarkably undamaged by the carnage. His inhibitions loosened by drink, he tried his hand at the instrument and discovered a natural talent.

After the war ended, Idris worked odd jobs, studied, and practiced, never returning home to his family. He eventually enrolled in Miskatonic to further his education both in music and in general.

Current Info:
Pianist and student of Miskatonic University’s prestigious music department. He resides on campus and makes a dismal living playing music at various clubs and bars in the Arkham area.

Skills:
A skilled musician, Idris also gained numerous skills in the war. He is no fool, and maintains decent grades at the University. He picked up bits and pieces of French during his time in the trenches of France.

Personality: Idris’s time as a soldier has made him rather stoic. However, he maintains a healthy dose of romantic passion mostly reserved for his music. He is somewhat charming and charismatic, though he is still troubled by the war.
