Re: Philosophy
I know Russell more for his analytic stuff, personally. Principia Mathematica attempted to find a logical basis for math as a whole. Quite the endeavor in my opinion.

Don't. Because of it I have no life. I'm always 'that guy' at parties.

Re: Philosophy
I don't like her. She asserts her opinions as fact, but provides no actual points to support them. She's like a really aggressive and arrogant Max Stirner. Basically, the alt text of this http://xkcd.com/1049/

Thank you. I agree completely. I take issue with anyone that advocates anarcho-capitalism.

Plus all her characters are one dimensional mary sues. I don't think I've ever met anyone who actually liked her.

Re: Philosophy
I never read her book. I bought it once simply because I heard that it was the inspiration for BioShock, but once I did some research into the book and the author, I returned it and bought that Art of War collection instead.

Re: Philosophy
I think Bioshock was showing what would happen if someone actually tried to turn her books into a reality. It would be chaos. I read Atlas Shrugged, and while it contained some smart ideas, there is just no way I can agree with her on anything. And The Art of War is fantastic. Much better than Rand.

Re: Philosophy
I don't particularly feel the need to. I mentioned it specifically so I would get lectured about it. My own attempts at studying her don't lead to me finding anything particularly disagreeable, but people nonetheless grow incredibly irate if I even ask, innocently, "What's so bad about her?". So I kind of stopped trying to even learn. I mentioned liking her so you guys would actually break down why her beliefs were evidently so bad XD

Re: Philosophy
She isn't a very good writer. I could forgive all the things I don't like about her philosophy if she was just a little better at creating and developing a story, or characters, or whatever. Plus her philosophy is just Stirner but asserted as undeniable fact.

Re: Philosophy
...Damn you guys are good. On the other hand, I don't think I'm that neurotic. Back to Rand, her ideas are not really implementable on a large scale. Sure I suppose it's great if you're a CEO or megalomaniac or just someone with low self esteem. But if everyone acted the assholeish way she seems to advocate, things would not run smoothly at all.

Rand's John Galt sounds a lot like Nietzsche's Übermensch. >_>

Re: Philosophy
I think Rand was definitely influenced by Nietzsche, but I prefer the Ubermensch's life affirmation to Galt's excessive individualism. Plus Nietzsche firmly asserted the subjectivity of all things, where as Rand put forth a clearly defined set of moral principals. And I love you too Fountain.
