The Fate of Team Fortress Two
""anyway, enough pointless screaming. all im saying is that tf2 was barely able to survive its first crisis. they had to make it free, just to make it profitable. its cheated death a long time, but valve became somewhat complacent, one of the updates that was extremely hyped only added a couple guns, and bonus ducks . and the last couple updates simply were csgo-esque cases and skins. the community has been clamoring for a true update for a long time, and with the advent of Overwatch, valve has started to take the community seriously. Lots of TF2 competitive players and youtubers have abandoned it in favor of Overwatch, and valve is in the works of "Huge" update. they claim it will rebalance all the weapons that were banned in comp, and will incorporate a competitive gamemode into tf2. they also want to give classes more varied ways to play them. that sounds amazing, and if they deliver it will definitely have a large impact on tf2. however, if they fail, like they did with end of the line when they gave us bonus ducks , then they may spell the death of the competitive community in tf2. sure not everyone will leave, but if enough do, they wont be able to compete with overwatch. tf2 becomes unprofitable, and they decide to cut their losses and focus their resources on a new game, possible hl3. this is all inference, and as such is prone to error, but that is what i can gather from the situation at hand""
that is a post from the skype chat that, in retrospect, is better suited for a forum topic. (this is in heavy discussion cuz i don't want ppl to derail this, plus it is a pretty heavy subject for me)
this thread's purpose it to facilitate discussion of the threat overwatch poses to tf2. (i dont hate overwatch, i love it in fact. but it does pose a threat to tf2, a 9 year old game.)

Well, as someone who doesn't care about these kinds of games. Speaking in business terms, there needs to be competition or else monopolies occur.
People will either continue playing TF2, play Overwatch, play both, or play neither. I don't see a threat. Just competition.

Re: The Fate of Team Fortress Two
The threat comes from the fact that Valve has become somewhat complacent with TF2, as there was no competition. They have not delivered to the community's expectations in years, and now with Overwatch on the horizon, they are stepping up their game. However, if they once again let us down with this update, like they did with End of the Line, then a large part of the TF2 community stands to leave.

I'm kinda surprised TF2 has lasted this long anyway.
